The commissioners of Port Canaveral in Florida have approved to allow the future 180,000 gross ton Carnival LNG mega ship to homeport from terminal 3. The new agreement will also bring a new modern cruise terminal.
Future Carnival Cruise Ship to Homeport at Port Canaveral
Last week we posted about the plans for Carnival Cruise Line to homeport their next generation LNG ship at Port Canaveral. This was part of a new agreement between the Miami-based cruise line and the port. Well, we’re now glad to tell you the agreement has today been approved and the plans can go ahead.
The previous agreement which was for six years and set to come to an end next year has now been replaced with a new one which will start from September 1, 2018. This means we can expect big things coming to Port Canaveral including the future LNG ship and a shiny state-of-the-art terminal 3.
Wayne Justice, Chairman, Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners, said:
“I am extremely excited about this next chapter for Port Canaveral, and extraordinarily proud of the Port’s leadership team, staff and our cruise partners who have brought us to where we are today. Carnival’s commitment to our Port and their multiple decades of operations here is a tribute to our entire Port community.”
The port and Carnival will invest in a new two-story 185,000-sq. ft. terminal which will be able to cater for the 180,000-ton vessel. The ship will have a 5,286 lower berth capacity with a maximum capacity of around 6,500 guests. A ship this size and with more passengers than any other sure will need a mega terminal to cater for her!
The new CT-3 Terminal is being developed and will also feature an adjacent elevated parking complex with a capacity of 1,800 vehicles. This is going to be the largest single Port Canaveral project ever and the development will also have a related wharf, road access, and surrounding enhancements. The cost will total around $150 Million.
Carnival will also be busy planning for their largest and most advanced cruise ship ever. Construction will soon begin on the fully powered Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) ship at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. The yet to be named mega ship will be completed in 2020.
